Bowtie Approach
Bowtie approach is a qualitative risk analysis tool that helps the operational and maintenance teams to focus on barriers (i.e., preventive and mitigative safeguards) to maintain operational safety. It visually demonstrates an effective management of all barriers which is a crucial aspect of risk-based process safety management.
The Bowtie diagram consists of consequences of a certain hazard and ways in which the organization can prevent those consequences from happening. The method acquired its name from the outcome of its analysis, which is a visual diagram that looks like a men’s bow tie.
From the left-most side of the Bowtie diagram are the threats, followed by the preventive barriers. The center (or the knot) displays the top event which is the moment in time when control over the hazard (above the knot) is lost, making the consequence imminent. Finally, from the center of the diagram to the right are the mitigative barriers and then the consequences. Degradation factors acting on barriers and its controls can also be incorporated.
A Bowtie Diagram in 6 Steps
There are 6 basic steps in building a Bowtie Diagram
Bowtie Approach
Saltegra facilitates Bow Tie sessions across different industries (e.g pharmaceutical, oil and gas, chemical manufacturing), making it possible to remarkably improve their process safety. We do this by:
Aside from Bowtie facilitation, Saltegra also offers Bowtie training workshops to equip the people of your organization with the knowledge of the Bowtie approach in risk management through:
- Explaining the Bowtie methodology using interactive examples and industry-specific scenarios
- Demonstrating how to construct Bow Tie diagrams using a respective software tool
Overall, the Bowtie diagram can provide a clear graphical representation of how to manage the risks. This representation can be readily understood by people at all levels – from operational personnel, senior managers to regulators and members of the public. Bowties can also be used in the design phase to test the adequacy and relevance of barriers, and if additional barriers and degradation controls are required. Creating these risk assessment diagrams, used to make risk communication very efficient, has never been easier with CGE Risk Management Solutions’ software – BowTieXP.
Industries We Serve
Aerospace
The aerospace industry makes use of different combustible chemicals that can endanger the lives of people and cause severe environmental damage if mishandled. Chemical process safety is crucial to prevent such incidents. Saltegra Consulting LLC provides consulting services to help you ensure proper safety programs are in place.
Biogas/Biomass
The biogas/biomass industry is concerned with the use of renewable energy sources from organic matter. Companies in this industry typically utilize different chemicals to convert agricultural waste into biofuel. Saltegra Consulting LLC can help these companies keep their workplaces safe through chemical process safety solutions.
Chemical Manufacturing
The chemical manufacturing industry is a broad field that encompasses the research, mass production, and distribution of various substances that other sectors will use. To prevent the accidental release of the toxic, flammable, and explosive compounds utilized in their operations, chemical process safety programs are essential.
